Galata Tower

The Galata Tower, originally named Christea Turris, was constructed in 1348 by the Genoese colony in Constantinople. It served as the apex of their fortified walls, protecting the district of Galata. During the Byzantine era, the tower was a crucial defensive structure, standing as the tallest building in the city at the time of its completion. Following the Ottoman conquest of 1453, the tower transitioned through various roles. It was utilized as a dungeon for prisoners of war, a naval depot, and later as a fire observation station due to its commanding view of the city's predominantly wooden housing. In the 16th century, it even housed an astronomical observatory established by Taqi ad-Din. The tower's iconic conical roof has seen multiple iterations. It was destroyed by storms and fires several times over the centuries, leading to various architectural modifications. In the 1960s, a major restoration replaced the wooden interior with concrete and restored the conical cap to its historical appearance. Today, it operates as a museum and observation deck, remaining one of Istanbul's most recognizable landmarks.
