Gülhane Park
Historical Significance
Gülhane Park, whose name means 'Rosehouse Park,' was once the private outer garden of the Topkapı Palace during the Ottoman Empire. For centuries, it served as a sanctuary for the sultans and their court, featuring lush greenery, exotic plants, and several kiosks. Its secluded nature kept it hidden from the general public, preserving its serene beauty exclusively for the imperial family until the early 20th century. The park holds immense historical significance as the site where the Edict of Gülhane was proclaimed in 1839. This landmark decree launched the Tanzimat reforms, a period of intensive modernization and reorganization within the Ottoman Empire. It promised to protect the rights of all citizens regardless of religion, marking a pivotal transition toward a more westernized legal and social framework within the state. In 1912, the park underwent a dramatic transformation when the municipality of Istanbul decided to open it to the public. It became a popular social hub, hosting zoos, fairs, and even the first statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1926. After a major renovation in the early 2000s, the park was restored to its more natural, historical layout, removing many modern additions to focus on its classic botanical beauty and its role as a peaceful retreat in the bustling Fatih district.
