Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum, often abbreviated as the V&A, was founded in 1852 following the immense success of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Originally established as the Museum of Manufactures, its primary mission was to educate the public and inspire British designers by showcasing exceptional examples of craftsmanship and industrial design. Under the leadership of its first director, Henry Cole, and the patronage of Prince Albert, the institution quickly outgrew its initial home and relocated to its current site in South Kensington in 1857. During this ceremony, she officially renamed the institution the Victoria and Albert Museum to honor her late husband's dedication to the arts and sciences.
